I guaritori Mumuo sono figure dall’elevato valore sociale all’interno delle comunità Eieyi.
Il loro ruolo nella società è circoscritto al compito che devono svolgere e, formalmente, non hanno potere politico-decisionale.
Tuttavia, grazie alle loro eccezionali conoscenze medicinali e abilità terapeutiche, l’intera comunità nutre per loro un riguardo talmente elevato che di tanto in tanto tramuta in timore.
Per questo motivo, capita spesso che i Mumuo vengano consultati prima di avvenimenti dannosi per la sopravvivenza del gruppo o degli individui che ne fanno parte.
Non tutte le sedute di guarigione vengono eseguite in forma rituale.
Generalmente, ciò avviene quando i capifamiglia temono l’incombere di un male che potenzialmente potrebbe diffondersi sull’intera comunità. Un evento più o meno consueto vista la forte tendenza superstiziosa delle popolazioni Eieyi.
In questo senso, sedute rituali dei Mumuo possono anche avvenire nel caso in cui a un individuo della comunità comparissero in sogno immagini di disgrazia e malattia, presagi negativi.
Nel brano che segue tre Mumuo, due donne e un uomo, eseguono alternativamente un intervento percutaneo su un cacciatore Eieyi feritosi durante una battuta lungo il fiume Pari’lui.
Una volta accertato il corretto riguardo di una serie di tabu, uno dopo l’altro, i tre Mumuo masticano una foglia di Tespekia fino a produrre una pasta dall’odore assai pungente.
A qualche secondo l’uno dall’altro, gli agenti rituali con la pasta di Tespekia in bocca iniziano a soffiare all’interno di strumenti medicinali rituali, chiamati Boi. Ciascun Mumuo fabbrica il proprio strumento da sé e, per questo motivo, ogni Boi risulta avere un tono diverso.
In questa particolare occasione è interessante notare l’intreccio ritmico che si viene a creare tra il soffio cerimoniale delle prime due Mumuo e l’ingresso finale del terzo.

Tutt’attorno, la comunità osserva in silenzio.

Medicine and ritual healing among the Eieyi.

The Mumuo healers are actors of high social value within the Eieyi communities. Their role in society is limited to the task they must perform and, formally, they have no political-decision-making power.
However, because of their exceptional therapeutic knowledge and abilities, the whole community has such a high regard for them that it occasionally turns into awe.
For this reason, it often happens that the Mumuos are consulted before events that could be harmful to the persistence of the group.
Not all healing sessions are performed in a ritual way.
Typically, this occurs when the heads of families fear an impending evil that could potentially spread to the entire community. A mostly usual event given the strong superstitious tendency of the Eieyi people.
In this sense, Mumuo’s ritual sessions can also take place when images of misfortune and illness, negative omens, appear as dreams to an individual within the community.
In the following musical example, three Mumuo healers, two women and a man, alternately perform a percutaneous intervention on an Eieyi hunter who got injured during a hunt along the Pari'lui river.
Once the correct observance for a strict set of taboos has been ascertained, one after the other the three Mumuos chew a leaf of Tespekia to produce a paste with a pungentful smell.
Within seconds of each other, the ritual agents with the Tespekia paste inside the mouth begin to blow healing aromas into ritual medicinal instruments called Boi. Each Mumuo builds her/his own instrument and for this reason each Boi has a different tone.
On this particular occasion it is interesting to note the rhythmic plot created by the ceremonial blowing of the first two Mumuos and the latest entrance of the third one.

All around, the community watches in silence.
